Learning how to can had been on my list of things to do since I graduated college five years ago. Last summer, I woke up one morning and decided that was going to be the day that happened. The pressure cooker really wasn't that scary!
Making jam was the next thing I decided to tackle this summer. Fortunately, mom had some time to show me how it's done while I was home last month. I agree with her, it's not hard, but it's much easier if someone shows you how to do it rather than explaining it on the phone. Yesterday was my first solo attempt at it. So far so good...but we will see how they turn out when I open one of the jars in a few days.
Mom said to turn the jars over for a few minutes after securing the bands (don't forget to make sure the bands are on tight or the jam will spill out!) so it will help them seal faster. They started popping fast after I turned them right side up, so there must be something to that.
I like making presents rather than buying them since I think they mean more that way, so I'll probably be giving some of these away at Christmas and whatnot. It's also pretty fun doing this and I always love homemade jam on my ice cream. It tastes SO much better than what you buy in the store.
