September is Yoga Month! It's always fun seeing what kinds of 'holidays' the world (and most notably, the internet) comes up with.
I started doing yoga in the end of 2012. Like most other things, I started it by accident. My gym offers fitness classes, but I never went to them since I didn't think I was good enough to do that. Well, news flash: everyone is good enough. Don't let the more skilled people in the class intimidate you. There are all skill levels there.
Anyways, I started going when I saw a flyer about the classes. "I guess it wouldn't hurt," I thought. I slept better that night than I had in years. All of that deep breathing made me feel like I'd just run a half marathon. Seriously, the next morning I felt the same as I did after my 2012 mini marathon. It was awesome! I started going to classes periodically and then stopped once I moved to North Carolina.
Moving back to Indiana prompted me to start it up again. Like anything, the more I go to yoga class, the more people I meet and the more fun it is to go.
I've definitely gotten a lot better in the last year or so. My favorite pose is the wheel, or as I like to call it, standing on my head.
I'm amazed how much stronger I am because of yoga. I notice it most in the front of my shoulders and my core. My stomach has NEVER been this flat!! Me and my bikini are definitely not complaining about that!
National Yoga Month started as a way to educate people about the health benefits of yoga and inspire a healthy lifestyle.
It's done so much for my mind and my body and it's my favorite part of my Sunday mornings. If you haven't tried it, I'd definitely recommend it! Just be patient with yourself and know you may not be able to do all the poses right away and it's okay. Listen to your body. If something hurts, don't aggravate it.
