9.3 for his 93

Anyone who has talked to me for ten minutes generally knows how close Grandpa and I were. It broke my heart when he passed away two months ago. Devastated doesn't even begin to describe how I have been feeling. It's definitely been an experience and I've been trying to remind myself to just be kind to myself. It's okay to feel this way. It was like losing a parent and a best friend all in one. And I know how lucky I am to have had a role model like him in my life for nearly 30 years.

So, to honor him, I've decided to run a 15K (9.3 miles) during the week of what would have been his 94th birthday this September. I was inspired by a story I heard about a guy doing a 43 mile bike ride for an uncle that just passed away at age 43. 93 miles is a LONG way to run and I think that's a bit much, but I can definitely do 9.3.

I haven't been training. At all. I love to run, but it's been just whenever I feel like it. Basically a few times a month. That obviously has to change if I'm going to do this and beat my time from my 15K in 2012.

Accountability is important and helps keep me on track when I'm less than motivated and when I'm busy. Let's be real here: life is busy and sometimes all I want to do is take a nap.

I'll be posting periodic updates on here to keep myself on track. The last time I ran a race that long was when I was training for a half marathon four years ago. I also weighed 30 pounds more than I do today, so I'm hoping it will be a little easier this time around.

Anyone else training for a race this summer? Keep us posted on your progress.
