5 Homemade Ice Cream Recipes

Homemade ice cream is the best summertime treat. If you're looking for a new favorite to try, I rounded up five great ones from my kitchen and from my friend Marybeth of Alarm Clock Wars.

Ice cream is a great way to cool off on a hot day. We used to love running through the sprinklers or jumping in the pool. Cows, however, can't just take a dip in the pool when they are hot. So how do they stay comfortable?

You may have seen large barns with open sides (or curtains on the sides that are rolled up in the summer) with cows inside. Those are freestall barns. Many of them are equipped with fans and misters to cool cows off. The ridge of the barn is also open to allow hot air to rise. These are so much more comfortable for the cows than some of the older barns.

On a hot day, the barn is one of the coolest places on the dairy. Take a dairy farm tour in the summer months and you'll see what I mean. No shade tree in the pasture can compare.

Cows also have access to fresh water and feed whenever they want. It's like an endless buffet. Just like us, cows tend to drink more water to stay cool in the summertime.
